Both Mozart and Salieri are portrayed conducting an orchestra in the modern manner — standing at the front and waving their arms. In the eighteenth century the conductor would typically play the first violin or harpsichord, with the other musicians watching his head and hand movements. It was the expansion of large orchestras in the nineteenth century that obliged the conductor to give up his instrument and assume a more visible position.
