The spell Kalabar uses is said to affect humans, transforming them into the very creature they mock. Despite this, it ends up affecting Gwen (who is a witch) but not the children.
Correction: Although Gwen is already a witch, she was wearing a Halloween mask, which is what allowed the spell to take effect on her. It didn’t work on Dylan or Sophie because their costumes weren’t of the kind that would be affected by the creature spell. As with another error noted here, several other human attendees at the dance were likewise unaffected due to the types of costumes they were wearing.
