The film departs from actual events on several occasions, seemingly for dramatic effect. Firstly, it portrays Ederle's performance at the Paris Olympic Games as disappointing, suggesting she won only a single bronze medal. In fact she earned two bronze medals and a gold as part of the 4 x 100 m relay team, and she and her teammates joined the US team's welcome-home parade. Secondly, nearly exactly a year passed between Ederle's first and second attempts to swim the English Channel — she returned to New York in the interval. The film also omits that, as a "warm-up" for her initial attempt, Ederle swam 22 miles from Battery Park (NY) to Sandy Hook (NJ) in a time that wasn't beaten for 81 years.
