The actor has been friends with Ben Affleck since childhood (Affleck is also Damon's distant relative). Perhaps it was thanks to this friendship that they were able to make it in Hollywood and gain worldwide recognition. The future stars went to conquer New York at a young age. Their first roles brought them neither fame nor money, and so the actors decided to go all-in: they wrote a screenplay and insisted that they themselves would perform the lead roles. The film turned out to be none other than 'Good Will Hunting' and won them an Oscar.
Damon lost weight twice while preparing for new roles. Before starting work on ' Courage Under Fire' (1996) he had to lose almost 40 pounds. Matt himself created his menu, and achieved the desired weight in 3 months; by that time Damon's weight got so unhealthy, he was put on medical supervision. Because of the rapid weight loss there were problems with his heart, and the actor had to undergo a long recovery course.
Damon's never been away from his wife for more than two weeks. This is an unspoken rule in their family, and has been so for more than 15 years – that's for how long they've been married. The unspoken agreement is not broken even during filming: Matt's wife and kids often follow him to set or the actor himself tends to pick projects closer to home.
