The plot of the mini-series "Washington Black" is based on the eponymous novel by Canadian author Esi Edugyan, which tells the story of an ambitious leader with a difficult fate. At the center of the events is a charismatic and sociable African American named Medwin Harris. He leads an organization for black people in the small town of Halifax, located in Canada. Medwin is a refugee, and the early years of his life can hardly be called happy. The hero moved around the country a lot until he settled in Nova Scotia.
