The Russian historical series "Sobor" is a saga that begins during the reforms of Peter the Great and unfolds over the next three centuries. At the center of the plot is a serf named Vanya Starshov, who is in love with his master's daughter, Masha. He is unwilling to accept the fact that the young princess is not suitable for him as a wife. Vanya is angry at God for giving him forbidden desires and not allowing him to fulfill them. He seeks help from a clergyman, but he only teaches him humility.
