The series is based on the novel "Just Cause" by writer John Katzenbach. The story revolves around a black man who has been sentenced to death for the murder of a child. He claims he is innocent, but no one believes him. In desperation, the protagonist sends a letter to a journalist named Maddie Cowart, who works in the crime section. She begins publishing articles in the publication that will help the imprisoned man avoid punishment.
