The story revolves around a military surgeon named Gleb Kaverin, who is both a cynic and a romantic. After a business trip to Africa, he boards a steamship to his hometown of Nizhny Novgorod. During the sea voyage, a pregnant celebrity on board starts feeling unwell. Evgeny Dobrovol'sky, the head of a perinatal center, is also traveling with the girl but is unable to help her.
