The action takes place in the small provincial town of Riversend, where a never-ending drought reigns. At the center of events is a charismatic and determined young priest who one day calmly opens fire on his parishioners, killing five people. A year later, investigative journalist Martin Scarsden arrives to write an article about the anniversary of the tragedy, unaware of how deeply he will become entangled in the case, falling into a trap.
