Lawyer Nick Jordan is forced to follow in his father's footsteps and start working for the wealthiest family in New York, the Darlings. Gaining their trust, Nick wants to uncover the circumstances surrounding his father's death. The job proves to be challenging as the rich have their own quirks. The head of the family is the experienced and insightful Tripp Darling, his wife Letitia is a socialite. Their children include politician Patrick, who is dating a transgender person; the seemingly perfect husband Brian, who is hiding an illegitimate son; divorced Karen; and the twins Juliet and Jeremy.
