The employee of the Department for Combating Economic Crime, Glebov, arrives from Moscow to conduct an inspection in a provincial town where he recently moved after his divorce and complete disillusionment with family life. He becomes an involuntary witness to a bank robbery that he came to inspect. The "black accounting" of the local "grain king" and criminal authority Zemka is stolen, and the participants of the robbery are found dead. The main suspect is Glebov, who goes on the run, realizing that finding the "black accounting" means finding the true criminal.
During the investigation, Glebov, posing as a financial inspector, uncovers not just one "skeleton in the closet" of the owners of agricultural enterprises. They try to negotiate with him, intimidate him, frame him, and even try to get rid of him... Glebov not only has to escape from the pursuit of Zemka's gangsters and his colleagues who are hot on his heels, but also solve his own family problems, as well as the personal problems of his suspects.
